Rem (レム)

Rem is a main supporting character in Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. She is a maid in the service of Roswaal L. Mathers and a member of the Emilia Camp. She plays a key role in several arcs of the series, notably in Arc 2, Arc 3, and beyond. Rem is a female Oni, and like her twin sister Ram, she was born in the Oni Village but later left to serve the Mathers household.

Appearance

Rem has a distinctive look, with sky blue hair and light blue eyes. As an Oni, she shares similar physical traits with her sister Ram, though their personalities and abilities differ greatly. She usually wears her maid uniform, which is typical of her role within the Mathers household. Her small stature and gentle demeanor often lead others to underestimate her strength.

Personality

Rem is known for her loyal and caring nature, especially toward those she deeply respects, like Subaru Natsuki and Emilia. While she initially harbors distrust toward Subaru, seeing him as an enemy of Lugunica, her feelings change as she witnesses his resilience and kindness. This leads to a strong bond between the two characters, where Rem ultimately confesses her love for Subaru. Rem is also deeply affected by her past, as she lived in the shadow of her sister, Ram, who was a prodigy Oni. This left Rem with feelings of inadequacy, although she is actually incredibly powerful in her own right.

Abilities & Powers

Rem is an Oni, and although she only has one horn, she possesses immense strength and combat abilities when tapping into her Oni powers. Some of her notable abilities and techniques include:

[3]Water Magic: Rem can use water magic offensively, creating barriers or powerful water-based attacks.

Weapons & Attacks

Rem wields a morningstar, a spiked mace on a chain, which she can skillfully swing with deadly accuracy. Her physical strength allows her to wield this heavy weapon with ease, making her a formidable opponent in close combat.

Arc 3

In Arc 3, Rem is gravely injured during a battle with the Sin Archbishop Lye Batenkaitos, who represents the Witch Cult. As a result, she falls into a comatose state after her memories and identity are eaten by Gluttony. Her comatose state becomes a driving force in Subaru’s motivations throughout the later arcs, as he seeks a way to restore her and bring her back to life. Her condition persists through several arcs.
